The challenge with this brief was to make the garden virtually maintenance free as the couple spend a lot of time away from home. As this garden is in a coastal location I decided to use stone filled gabions to create height and structure within the space and break up the long rectangular area. I chose smooth rounded stones to echo the pebbles on the beach nearby.
Alpine plants were grown in pockets of soil within the gabions to soften the structure and provide colour.
I designed two separate seating areas at either end of the garden, one to catch the evening sun and the other under the shelter of an overhanging building. Driftwood sculptures provide a focal point that can be enjoyed from either of the seating areas. The garden seating was made by using gabions for the base with planks of driftwood on top to sit on.
